Causes of Stomach Cancer
|
|
There are
several different causes of stomach
cancer. Humans have
control over the prevention of some of the causes of stomach
cancer, while others are
uncontrollable and unpredictable. An individual's diet is the
backbone to his or her health. If an individual wants to remain
healthy he/she must have a regimented diet full of all of the
recommended items in the food pyramid. For instance, a cause of
stomach
cancer is a high
salty, high fats diet. Eliminate these items and replace them
with the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. |
|
|
Crops such as,
tomatoes, potatoes, and corn can become infected
with a fungus known as aflatoxin. This toxin
will infiltrate into an individual's system
causes several different
infections.
These
infections can render an individual's
nervous system weak, and susceptible to
diseases, such as, stomach
cancer.
If an individual has a family history of stomach
cancer,
their risk factor of developing the disease at
some point in their lifetime is double that of
those who do not have a family history of
stomach
cancer. An individual's immune system
combats all
infections, viruses, and diseases. If an
individual is currently suffering from an
existing
infection, it will render the immune system
vulnerable to any
infections,
viruses, and diseases. Once an individual is
infected with an
infection
such as Helicobacter Pylori, it leaves their
body
defenseless against other diseases they come in
contact with. An individual's immune system

destroys an individual internally. This internal

Types of Stomach Cancer:
Stomach
cancer
is a type of
cancer that develops within the lining
tissues of the human stomach, also referred to
as gastric
cancer. In total, there are five different
stomach
cancer types: adenocarcinoma, gastric
lymphomas, GIST, Carcinoid
cancer,
and Leiomyosarcoma. Research is still being
conducted in order to better understand each of
the different stomach
cancer
types. Adenocarcinoma is the most frequently
diagnosed, making up for approximately ninety to
ninety-five percent of all stomach
cancer
cases in the United States. Nonetheless, each of
the five stomach
cancer
types can be equally dangerous and harmful if
the proper treatment methods are not followed.
Many cases of adenocarcinoma, and other stomach
cancer
types, can be treated with surgical procedures,
but an early detection of the disease is crucial
in order to prevent the
cancer
from spreading to other parts of the
body. |
|
Adenocarcinoma:
Adenocarcinoma is
stomach
cancer that originates from the gland cells
found in the innermost linings of the stomach.
It is almost certain that a newly discovered
malignant
cancerous tumor in this area will be labeled
adenocarcinoma. Though adenocarcinoma is the
most common of all the stomach
cancer
types, it can be just as deadly as some of the
rarer forms. There are five stages in which the
cancer
can be classified, with the last, Stage IV,
being the most fatal. |
|
Gastric lymphomas :
This is defined as stomach
cancer
that develops within the immune system tissues
along the walls of the stomach. Next to
adenocarcinoma, lymphoma is the second most
diagnosed of the stomach
cancer
types. The tumors caused by lymphoma are often
hard, causing extreme discomfort. Preventative
and treatment methods are usually determined
after a full diagnosis of lymphoma; there are
some cases where the lymphoma
cancer
cells are overly active and aggressive while
other cases present a more slowly developing
lymphoma.
Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST):
This
form of
cancer, unlike adenocarcinoma, develops
along the tissues that maintain the digestive
organs. These tumors develop at a much slower
pace than adenocarcinoma or lymphoma and
originate from the stomach muscles. Some of the
symptoms for gastrointestinal stromal tumors
include pain or discomfort in the abdominal area
and trouble swallowing foods.
Cancer
caused by Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors is one
of the more rare stomach
cancer
types.
Carcinoid Cancer:
Carcinoid
cancer, also known as carcinoid tumors,
originates from the tissues within the digestive
system that are responsible for producing
hormones. Carcinoid
cancer
releases hormones and/or chemicals into
different blood streams causing symptoms for
this
cancer
to emerge throughout different parts of the
human
body.
However, while the symptoms of carcinoid
cancer
may be evident in various
body
parts, the actual tumors do not spread into the
other
body
parts, making removal of the tumors a relatively
easy task.
Leiomyosarcoma:
Leiomyosarcoma is
perhaps one of the most rare stomach
cancer
types. This disease develops in the smooth
muscle cells contained within the stomach walls.
This
cancer
eventually grows to a point where it is
unstoppable and develops tumors. Leiomyosarcoma
is actually a form of
cancer
that can affect other
body
parts, not just the stomach. Cases of this
disease have been found in the uterus,
intestines, and even the skin. The most common
site for Leiomyosarcoma to be diagnosed,
however, is in the stomach. |
|
Stomach Cancer Stages:
As with any other form of
cancer,
there are various stages through which the
cancer
will progress over its course. For each unique
type of
cancer, there is a varying amount of stages.
The different stages are categorization methods
to differentiate the severity and duration of
the
cancer
in a particular patient. In all, there are five
different stages of stomach
cancer.
The earlier stomach
cancer
stages are the least dangerous and treatment
methods are much more efficient and effective
for an early detection of stomach
cancer.
As the stages of stomach
cancer
progress, the severity and harmfulness of the
cancer
also increases. Most cases of stomach
cancer
are treated with surgery, but as mentioned
above, it is always in the better interest of
the patient to be treated as soon as possible.
Stage 0,
the first of the
five stages of stomach
cancer,
is also the least harmful. A
cancer
found at Stage 0 is considered to be in the very
beginnings of the disease, and non-invasive
surgery may be an option to treat the stomach
cancer.
The
cancer
is usually found in the innermost layer of the
stomach wall in the first of the stomach
cancer
stages.
Stage I,
Stomach
cancer
is considered to be in Stage I if the
cancer
has spread out beyond the first layer of the
stomach. It is possible for lymph nodes to be
growing in Stage I of the stomach
cancer
stages however the lymph nodes will most likely
be in the near vicinity of the tumor.
Stage II,
of the different stages of stomach
cancer
can be defined by three possible criteria. It is
likely that lymph nodes will have started to
form near the tumor while the
cancer
is developing in the third layer (muscle layer)
of the stomach. It is also possible for the
cancer
to be found in the second layer of the stomach
wall with lymph nodes spreading farther from the
tumor. The last possible condition for Stage II
of the stomach
cancer
stages is the
cancer
being found in all four layers of the stomach
with no sign of lymph nodes.
Stage III,
In Stage III of
the various stages of stomach
cancer,
it is likely that lymph nodes will be evident
around the tumor and in some cases; the lymph
nodes may have started spreading to other parts
of the
body.
In Stage III, it is also very likely that the
cancer
has developed in all four layers of the stomach
wall, and possibly into the surrounding tissues
near the stomach.
The last of the
stomach
cancer stages, Stage IV, is the most
dangerous and harmful of all the stages of
stomach
cancer. Stage IV stomach
cancer
will have affected the entire stomach area with
lymph nodes, along with a very likely
possibility of the spread of the
cancer
into surrounding tissues and organ. |

Stomach
Cancer Treatment: Surgery:-
Surgery
is a widely recommended treatment method for
various types of cancers. Certain kinds of
cancers may be treated with prescribed
medicines, but a large number of
cancer
patients usually require some form of surgery to
alleviate the symptoms and the spread of the
cancer.
Stomach
cancer surgery is a common procedure, and
one that has been found to be one of the most
effective methods to treat stomach
cancer.
Depending on the severity and the stage of the
disease, a stomach
cancer
surgery can usually remove the
cancer
and the affected areas of the stomach. As with
any other form of
cancer,
an early detection is essential to ensure that
the
cancer
does not spread into other parts of the
body.
Most patients who are still in the earlier
stages of the
cancer
are eligible for an operation, but only some of
stage IV
cancer patients will be able to take
advantage of a stomach
cancer
surgery. As the stages of
cancer
progress, it is more likely that the disease
will affect other parts of the
body.
Depending on the stage of the
cancer,
there are different types of stomach
cancer
surgery available for patients. An endoscopic
mucosal resection is a type of stomach
cancer
surgery which is the least invasive of all the
options, and is usually most effective on
patients in the very beginning stages of stomach
cancer.
For those patients in the later stages of the
cancer,
a stomach
cancer surgery called a gastrectomy may be
required. A subtotal gastrectomy is a partial
removal of the affected areas of the stomach
while a total gastrectomy is a more complete
removal of the stomach along with the
cancer
and lymph nodes. A total gastrectomy is a
complicated procedure which involves the
surrounding organs, and will affect the
patient’s eating habits after the procedure is
done. Stomach
cancer
surgery, as with any other type of surgery, is a
very delicate procedure which should be done by
a surgeon or doctor that you trust. In the case
that a stomach
cancer
surgery is necessary, ensure that the surgeon
treating you and hospital you are being treated
at is experienced and skilled in such
operations. |

Radiation Therapy Stomach Cancer:
Radiation therapy is a
commonly used procedure for stomach
cancer treatment to destroy
cancer cells. Radiation therapy is
often used as an follow-up therapy after
surgery to destroy small deposits of
cancer cells that may still remain.
Some patients prefer a treatment of
radiation therapy and chemotherapy to
shrink the
cancer and avoid invasive surgeries.
There is one type of radiation therapy
commonly used for stomach
cancer treatment. In external beam
radiation therapy, the doctor will
conduct a review of the patient's
medical history and test results.
Afterward, he or she will determine the
area to receive the radiation therapy.
When the doctor determines the amount of
radiation and how it will be given,
treatment begins. In most cases,
radiation is not capable of destroying a
tumor within one session. Therefore,
external radiation is usually given in
fractions, most often on a daily basis,
5 days a week for 5 to 8 weeks. The
amount of stomach
cancer treatment a patient undergoes
is dependent on the size, location, and
type of the
cancer as well as the specifications
of the patient. This stomach
cancer treatment focuses radiation
on
cancer from a machine that is
outside of the
body.
The treatment is very similar to an
ordinary x-ray, except it is given
during a much longer period of time. A
patient will receive the radiation
therapy about five times a week for a
period of weeks or months. When combined
with other treatments, such as
chemotherapy and surgery, the stomach
cancer treatment can be quite
effective,
While
external beam radiation therapy is
relatively safe, there are certain
side effects that may arise during
the course of the treatment. The
side effects are usually mild and
temporary. They include:
|
Skin
problems at the site of the
radiation therapy;
| Diarrhea; |
Nausea and vomiting;
| Fatigue; |
Low blood cell
counts |
These side effects
usually take several weeks to go
away once radiation therapy is
finalized. Long-term effects of
radiation therapy, while difficult
to predict may prove to be more
harmful.
Radiation therapy can also help
reduce symptoms of advanced stomach
cancer, including pain,
bleeding, and problems associated
with eating.
